Gill Nichols (01840 230393)
and Brian (01566 774902)

Different Meeting places near Crackington Haven to match length of walk

Altarnun and St Clether Diary exchange.  Quarter 4 2007 diaries for Altarnun and St Clether that are not sent by email, will be available at this meeting. As a fall back position, Altarnun Diaries not exchanged will be in the Post Office in Altarnun from Monday 8th October. St Clether Diaries will be with Brenda from the same date.

The Walk
. Gill has kindly offered to lead us on another of her favourite coastal walks. It is being arranged so that members have a choice of walking distance. The full walk will start at 10.15 from the Post Office in Higher Crackington SX 1566 9551 and will walk 1.5 miles west through Trehole Farm to a layby SW of  Trevigue (1348 9511) to join the rest for coffee. Park in the car park of the Crackington Institute opposite the Post Office
The short walk starts at Trevigue at 11.15 am and follows the coastal footpath above Strangles beach to Cambeak and Crackington Haven.- a distance of about 2 miles. This is the most scenic part of the walk, along Highcliff,  passing the wild goats and places where Gill tells us the parasitic "Dodder" is profuse on the gorse earlier in the year.
Lunch will be at The Cabin, Crackington (we need to have numbers for those planning to eat there) where we can get baguettes, pizzas etc.
Transport will be available to ferry anyone wanting to end the walk there back to their own cars. The remainder can walk back up the valley on footpaths to Congden's Bridge and then by lanes back to Higher Crackington. The distance of the after dinner walk is 1.5 miles, making the longest walk a total of 5 miles.
If the weather is bad we will do the walk the following week, 14th October. If unsure of the weather on the day, contact Brian or Gill.

Dating Hedgerows with Terry Faull Diary Exchange N. Hill and N. Petherwin

and Brian (01566 774902)

North Petherwin Parish Church

Hedgerows are a key feature of our landscape, especially as we have lost a great deal of unimproved habitat due to farming needs. They play a vital role as wildlife corridors for many species, including Bats.  Dating them can be hard. One method (Hoopers Rule) is a count of woody species in a 30 metre length of hedgerow. It was not established for this part of the UK so how valid is it? What DOES it teach us? What else can we use to asses the biodiversity of a hedge? These are some of the things we hope that Terry will be able to talk to us informally about as we explore a couple of selected hedgerows in the North Petherwin Region. Hopefully we will learn enough to apply the approach to some of the ancient hedgerows in our other parishes
