Hedgerows are a key feature of our landscape, especially as we have lost a great deal of unimproved habitat due to farming needs. They play a vital role as wildlife corridors for many species, including Bats. Dating them can be hard. One method (Hoopers Rule) is a count of woody species in a 30 metre length of hedgerow. It was not established for this part of the UK so how valid is it? What DOES it teach us? What else can we use to asses the biodiversity of a hedge? These are some of the things we hope that Terry will be able to talk to us informally about as we explore a couple of selected hedgerows in the North Petherwin Region. Hopefully we will learn enough to apply the approach to some of the ancient hedgerows in our other parishes |
