Introduction
Projects
Development The Survey project was started to encourage
monitoring of local wildlife.
Existing Wildlife Surveys. Only selected area of specific
interest can be surveyed by professionals, because of the limited
resources that are available. Until
recently, very little monitoring
had done outside recognised conservation areas, especially on a regular basis.
Voluntary wildlife experts provide regular information to
ERCCIS, the
Environmental Record Centre for Cornwall and the
Isles of Scilly. ERCCIS have several ongoing projects [Ponds, Bird Atlas, Mammal
Atlas] covering Cornwall as a whole. To date, this is the only project the
focuses on individual parishes.
The Proposed Survey Project is to use volunteers with minimum existing survey skills to provide regular information on a wide range of simplified projects designed to cover a wide range of habitat and species in each of the 18 or so parishes supported by the Launceston Branch of Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The surveys are being designed to be Parish-based, so that volunteers can contribute in their own back yard, reducing travel, allowing volunteers to survey on land where they are know by landowners. Feed-back is to be through parish notice boards and reports to parish councils. The survey projects have been chosen to represent a wide range of species and habitats, not just those on biodiversity action lists

Voluntary
Surveyors.
The projects are to be designed for use
by anyone interested in a given subject. The volunteers do not need to be 'experts'.
They can choose one or more of the survey projects. Training will be provided
if required. They do not need to be members of CWT
or any other organisation Parish Coordinators match up volunteers skills and interests with existing projects, liaise with landowners, provide the first source of help to volunteers and communicate what has been learned back to the parish community. Access to a computer and the web is helpful, but not essential. Website development. There are lots of opportunities to contribute to the website that will be the heart of the project, providing information for the site or developing the site itself. |
